What is clouds.

 Cloud The cloud is a general metaphor that is used to refer to the Internet. Initially, the Internet was seen as a distributed network and then, with the invention of the World Wide Web, as a tangle of interlinked media. As the Internet continued to grow in both size and the range of activities it encompassed, it came to be known as the cloud. 





The use of the word cloud may be an attempt to capture both the size and nebulous nature of the Internet. Where the Web was an upgrade that made the Internet much more user friendly by adding media to the text-file based sharing, Web 2.0 and virtual servers allow people to run applications, create content, engage in commerce and cary out thousands of other activities that go well beyond media consumption.


 What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud Computing Cloud computing is a type of internet-based computing where an application doesn't access the resources directly, rather it makes a huge resource pool through shared resources. It is modern computing paradigm based on network technology that is specially designed for remotely provisioning scalable and measured IT resources. 



It allows on-demand access to a shared pool of dynamically configured computing resources and higher-level services thereby eliminating the need of massive investments in local infrastructure. The computing resources are managed centrally which are located over multiple servers in clusters. Users can access software and applications from wherever they need without worying about storing their own data. 

It simply breaks down to "pay only for what you need". Cloud technology enables the re-usability, of IT resources for storing large databases, developing and hosting complex applications, and expanding computational power and other services on demand.

 Eliminating or reducing investments on large-scale infrastructure and software, coupled with the pay-per- use model, significantly reduces IT costs.


History of Cloud Computing .

History of Cloud Computing The abstract idea of cloud computing developed around circa 1950 when mainframe computers were primarily used to access applications and data residing on clients' localized infrastructure. 

The 1960s saw the birth of IT services coupled with a growing demand for personal computers which used decentralized computing resources. By the 1990s, the industry adopted dynamic client/ server architectures, with service providers offering virtual private networks. This era saw the demand for higher bandwidths and the 'dot- com revolution',


 The outsourcing of IT infrastructure management, however, did not begin till 2000. Especially because by this time, companies had built up capabilities to provide advanced server virtualization services via hosted cloud environments.


 Since then, cloud computing has evolved to include the delivery of infrastructure, platform, software and, more recently, network 'as a service' encompassing laaS, PaaS and SaaS. Today, collaborative computing (a diverse collection of enterprise applications and virtualized social interaction tools) is offered as a service under the utility model to dynamic clients. Evidently, these and related advancements continue to grow at a rapid pace.



Characteristics of Cloud Computing.

 There are following essential characteristics of Cloud Computing: 

1.  On-demand self-services: 

The cloud computing services does not require any human administrators, user themselves are able to provision, monitor and manage computing resources as needed. 

 

2. Broad network access: 

The computing services are generally provided over standard networks and heterogeneous devices.



3. Rapid elasticity: 

The computing services should have IT resources that are able to scale out and in quickly and on as needed basis. Whenever the user require services it is provided to him and it is scale out as soon as its requirement gets over. 


4. Resource pooling:

The IT resource (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) present are shared across multiple applications and occupant in an uncommitted manner. Multiple clients are provided service from a same physical resource. 


 5. High scalability:

It means on demand provisioning of resources on a large scale without requiring human interaction with each service provider, 6. 4. 5. 

 

 6. High availability and reliability:

Availability of servers is more reliable and high because it minimizes the chances of infrastructure failure.


7. Agility: 

It shares the resources between users and works very quickly.
